ICC Test rankings: Virat Kohli finishes 2019 as No. 1 batsman

30/12/2019

India captain Virat Kohli has finished as the No.1 batsman in International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings for Test batsmen for the 2nd successive year. With 928 points, Virat Kohli has ended 2019 as the numero uno in Test cricket. Australia's star batsman Steve Smith finishes behind Kohli at the 2nd spot with 911 points. Notably, Steve Smith had risen to the No. 1 spot after a stunning run in Ashes 2019 -- which was also his comeback series after spending a year away due to ball-tampering ban. Smith had scored 774 runs at a staggering average of 110.57 in 4 matches in England during which he dethroned Virat Kohli. However, Virat Kohli had replaced Steve Smith as the No. 1 Test batsman after his good run in the home series against South Africa and Bangladesh earlier this year. Kohli became the No. 1 batsman again earlier this month after Steve Smith had a series of ordinary outuings against Pakistan at home. Steve Smith had an opportunity to close in on the gap but the Australia batsman hasn't lived up to his reputation in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand. Smith has managed just 151 runs from 2 Tests at an average of 37.75. Nonetheless, Australia's Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith are on top of the run-scoring charts in Tests in 2019. While Labuschagne is the only batsman to have scored more than 1000 runs in the calendar year -- 1104 in 11 matches, Smith has managed 965 runs in just 8 matches. Virat Kohli, who is on the 13th spot in the list of top-scorers in 2019, has scored 612 runs from 8 matches. Meanwhile, 3 Indians, including Virat Kohli, have finished the year among the top 10 in ICC Test rankings. While Cheteshwar Pujara has dropped a place to 5th, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has finished at the 7th spot. Notably, it was an Indian batsman who was at the top of the ICC Test batting charts at the start of the decade -- Gautam Gambhir with 877 points. Virender Sehwag was also in the top 10 as of January 1, 2010 -- 4th with 805 points. South Africa's wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock is the biggest mover as he has jumped 8 spots to enter the top 10 after match-winning knocks in the Boxing Day Test against England in Centurion.
